The standard spindle speeds are not perfect for metal turning, so I decided to make a better motor system. I used a 1.25 hp treadmill motor and adapted it for use with the lathe. The motor spindle was too big for use with my v pulley so I turned it down to .5 in. Bolting the motor to the lathe bed and using my dial indicator for precision I was able to turn down the motor spindle to .5" with .005" runout across the length of the spindle.
